  53. Playing Dune II I seem to have to make a choice, hearing music in the
  54. title screen (before crashing), hearing Voice before crashing, or no sound
  55. and playing the game.  This is not a choice that I like to have to make. 
  56. Has anyone gotten it to work with music and sound?  If so, please let me
  57. know your SBOS setup, memory setup, IRQ etc...

  77.         daughterboards posted.  One of them was a daughterboard for the
  78.         Mitsumi CD-ROM drives.  All the ads I've seen for Mitsumi drives
  79.         also included a controller.  Does anyone know what benefit you
  80.         get (if any) from using the daughterboard rather than the standard
  81.         controller?

  95. I managed to get the digitized audio to work... I think...

  97. Using SBOS 1.23 with no switches ( -o3 seems to hang the thing )
  98. and settings
  99. ULTRASOUND IRQ = 5
  100. MIDI IRQ = 7

  102. This was someone's ( I can't remember who ) suggestion that IRQ 7 is
  103. hardwired in T2029. I figure that this might be the same problem with
  104. alot of games with digitized audio problems. Unfortunately, I also found
  105. out that with the IRQ settings this way, The Lost Files of Sherlock
  106. Holmes just crashes on me...
  107.

  120. After recently getting my GUS card, I decided to try out the Maximum OverKill
  121. (Commanche) demo I downloaded but no matter what the option, I can't get any
  122. music or sound.  I have run the setup program (or whatever it was) and chose
  123. both SoundBlaster and AdLib but neither will work.

  125. Anybody got the MAXOK demo to work with a GUS?

  164. I just bought a GUS, and was wondering what the symptoms
  165. of a bad motherboard are. I set it up on a 16 bit DMA channel,
  166. and my system still works, but I've had a little trouble getting
  167. SBOS to work with anything. Oh, yeah, I cannot get the Wing Commander
  168. II Install program to run(it crashes my system now) whereas I could
  169. before I installed the ultrasound.

  189. I've called Digital Audio Labs (the folks who informed Gravis of the
  190. details of the problem) and they say it's sorta random. They contacted
  191. OPTi, who sent them a spec sheet with UMC at the top of the page. So I
  192. think the chipsets are related.
  193.  
  194. The chip is question is the 82C206, DMA and interrupt controller chip. Both
  195. bad systems that Digital Audio Labs saw had a datecode of 9149. There are a
  196. couple known solutions, the easiest of which is to simply use an 8-bit DMA
  197. channel. The next is to disable the DMA cascade (channel 4), however this
  198. causes all the low DMA channels to be inactive (0-3). Generally not a good
  199. thing. The third is a hardware mod, adding a pull-up resistor to the bad
  200. pin. This is a dangerous solution as soldering irons and motherboards
  201. usually don't do well together.

  248. I logged onto the Sierra/Dynamix BBS and asked about the sound problems 
  249. with their games ane the Gravis Ultrasound.  Within a couple of days I got
  250. this response back from them:

  252.     The Gravis board just started selling in the U.S.  We are aware of
  253.     the incompatabilities with our software.  We're working on creating
  254.     drivers for this board being that it's Soundblaster emmulation is
  255.     not the greatest in the world.  Wwhen drivers are available
  256.     we'll have them in the MUSIC library for downloading.  Keep in

  272. Unfortunately, this is the response I got back a week later:

  274.     We're aware of incompatabilities with the Gravis Ultrasound's
  275.     Soundblaster emmulation.  This is really a Gravis issue. It's not
  276.     up to us as a software company to produce sound drivers for every
  277.     sound card out there.  We've already create sound drivers for many
  278.     of the most popular sound devices.  Given that the Gravis Ultrasound
  279.     is "supposed" to emmulate the Creative Labs Soundblaster, we will
  280.     probably not be creating a individual driver for the Gravis card.
  281.     We have as yet been unable to contact Gravis in an attempt to obtain
  282.     on of their cards for testing purposes.  Eventually we'll have more
  283.     information as to compatibility with our products.  Take care.

  306. been posted here and elsewhere before. Only minor mod is the pin
  307. assignments for the midi-out inverters, which were originally 
  308. incorrectly drawn as 14-13, 12-10.

  369. get Ultima 7 to work?  I read in the general listing that you use sbos 1.23,
  370. and I did that.. but, the digital speech comes out ofor only a split 
  371. second and then dies..

  374. a genuine sb..

  376. My computer is a 486/33, never had a problem with any other ultrasound tool
  377. except the dram tester. (reports bank 3 and 4 or just 4 bad)  Bare system,
  378. except himem.sys and dos being high, and of course sbos 1.23.

  380. Whoever got this working, please let me know how you did, if you used the
  381. device driver in conjunction with the tsr (as the included text file implies)
  382. or what..

  416. be able to USE my Ultrasound under OS/2.  When I say USE, I mean I want to
  417. be able to use it with WinOS/2, with the OS/2 MMPM/2, and with DOS under
  418. OS/2.  With ALL apps.  I want an OS/2 specific version of SBOS so that games
  419. will think there is a SBPro installed etc etc etc.

  446. I found that when I updated to the new drivers the same thing happened - no
  447. sound device worked under windows.
  448.  
  449. My solution was to remove the new sound driver, reboot, reinstall the
  450. old  driver, check to see if the old driver worked - it did, remove the
  451. old driver, reboot, install the new driver, reboot, and then it worked
  452. ! Why it didn't work the first time, I don't know.
  453.  
  454. I also have found on a couple of occassions that after using a sound
  455. program, Windows will no longer be happy with the driver. I have to
  456. remove and restall the driver to get it to work again.

  476. About Winjammer 2.23 causing a general protection error:

  478. According to the author of WinJammer, the GPE occurs if you have
  479. configured more than one port, for instance, GUS and an MPU-401,
  480. and you only use one of them.
  481. Even if your only MIDI device is the gus, you can configure it
  482. as two output ports, one for the internal synth, and one for the MIDI
  483. port. 
  484. If you configure the Winjammer to use only the GUS as the output port,
  485. it should work. (It does for me)
